Village's new decorations obsolete | This is Sussex [did the HSE really say this?]

Village's new decorations obsolete | This is Sussex: 'ELF and safety' rules have forced Mayfield to replace all its Christmas lights, less than a decade after the last investment.

Thousands of pounds were raised six years ago to buy new neon decorations for the village. Now more cash is needed to upgrade to approved LED ones, because neon ones, which use mercury, cannot be replaced.

Parish councillor Andrew Burnett, of Mayfield Chamber of Commerce, said: "Neon lights are less common and the Health and Safety Executive has said the fittings we could hang ribbon LEDs on are not strong enough. It's unfortunate we spent all that money just before LED became the norm.
