Study warns of aging chimneys' asbestos threat | The Japan Times Online: Asbestos used as insulation material for chimneys could peel off and become airborne from chimneys at tens of thousands of buildings nationwide, according to a survey released Wednesday.
The Tokyo Occupational Safety & Health Center, a nonprofit organization that led the study, said the carcinogen can be found in chimneys at schools, hospitals and factories, including those built between the 1960s and 1990s.
