Midland Hotel fire - 150 people evacuated - Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service -

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service - Midland Hotel fire - 150 people evacuated: AROUND 150 people were evacuated from the Midland Hotel in Manchester city centre after a fire in the basement last night (Sunday, December, 16).

The blaze in the laundry room at 7.51pm caused the automatic fire alarm to sound, which alerted a crew from Manchester Central Fire Station.

Crews were helped by an off duty firefighter from Yorkshire, who was a guest at the hotel and rang 999 while they were on their way to confirm that there was a genuine fire and that there was smoke issuing from the six-storey hotel building.

Two more fire engines from Manchester Central and Salford fire stations rushed to the Peter Street hotel.

The fire which involved an industrial sized washer drier was limited to the basement laundry area and crews put the flames out using a hose reel while wearing breathing apparatus.

They then used a fan to disperse the smoke and made the electrics safe before the guests were allowed back into the hotel.
