IDOT worker burned in accident at Towanda

TOWANDA — A state worker was burned Friday morning in an explosion and fire at a highway maintenance facility on Route 66 south of Towanda, but Illinois Department of Transportation officials said he is expected to make a full recovery.

The Towanda Fire Department responded to a call that a piece of pavement-patching equipment had exploded at 8:43 a.m. Friday. “When we arrived, we initially found equipment on fire,” said Towanda Fire Chief Brett Lueschen.

The fire was under control in 10 minutes, and materials involved in the incident were surrounded by a dike to prevent runoff, he said.

The IDOT worker, who has not been identified, was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria by the Normal Fire Department. There were no other injuries.
