Beijing acts to muzzle media | The Australian
CHINA is cracking down on independent media groups, jailing "phony" journalists and expelling the second foreign reporter within a year.
It was reported earlier this week that in the past year the government had shut down 184 media organisations that were not state-sanctioned while three people claiming to be journalists had been jailed for five years.
The General Administration of Press and Publications has revealed it confiscated five million copies of unsanctioned newspapers and magazines, while a range of "illegal" reporting offices were closed.
