Customer extinguishes grocery store fire: VENETA — An alert shopper grabbed an extinguisher off a wall and put out a fire in the produce area of Ray’s Food Place Market Sunday.
The 5:50 p.m. blaze still caused an estimated $100,000 in damage. It also forced evacuation and early closure of the store, located in a shopping center at the intersection of Highway 126 and Territorial Road.
Most of the loss was due to smoke damage to produce and fresh food items at a nearby deli area, according to Lt. Tressa Miller of Lane County Fire District 1. Some of fresh fruits and vegetables were also contaminated by carbon dioxide suppressant material from the fire extinguisher, she said.
